Political Repression in Turkey: Erdoğan Has Istanbul’s Mayor İmamoğlu Arrested

The political situation in Turkey is escalating dramatically:

On March 19, 2025, Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul and one of the most promising opposition candidates for the 2028 presidential election, was arrested on questionable charges.

He is accused of corruption, supporting a terrorist organization, and being a member of a criminal group — allegations that İmamoğlu and his supporters strongly deny.

Macit Karaahmetoğlu on WELT:

The arrest came just days before he was to be officially nominated by the main opposition party, CHP.

Observers see the move as a deliberate political blow aimed at eliminating a threatening rival.

Polls have shown that İmamoğlu has surpassed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in popularity — a fact that seemingly led Erdoğan to use the judiciary to neutralize his challenger.

Erdoğan, who has repeatedly acted in authoritarian ways toward critics in the past, is once again proving that he fears real democratic competition.

This latest move bears strong resemblance to the tactics of authoritarian leaders such as:

– Vladimir Putin in Russia,

– and Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus,

who secure their power through sham trials and the imprisonment of political opponents.

The situation in Turkey is becoming increasingly clear:

Anyone who poses a threat to Erdoğan ends up behind bars.

Despite a nationwide ban on demonstrations, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in cities across Turkey to protest the arrest.

Police responded with violence — using tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets.

But the protests continue. Many citizens now see İmamoğlu as a symbol of hope for democratic change.

The international response has been swift and critical.

The Council of Europe called the arrest an attack on the democratic will of the Turkish people.

Human rights organizations are demanding the immediate release of İmamoğlu and a return to the rule of law in Turkey.

With this move, Erdoğan has once again proven:

He is not a democrat — he is determined to cling to power at any cost, even if it means destroying the last remnants of democratic culture in the country.

Trump Lets Putin Have His Way: Investigations into Russian Child Abductions Halted – Sabotage of Justice?

And this is the kind of U.S. President 2.0 who believes he deserves the #NobelPeacePrize? How far gone is Trump?

It is an unbelievable scandal: Donald Trump has halted a crucial program aimed at investigating the mass abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia.

Not only does this destroy vital evidence of Putin’s war crimes, but it also abandons thousands of abducted children to their fate.

Observers are calling this a direct sabotage of international investigations – in favor of the Kremlin.

Child Theft as a Weapon of War: Putin’s Heinous Crime

Since the start of the war, Russia has systematically abducted Ukrainian children – over 30,000 children have been torn from their families, taken to Russian camps, re-educated, and put up for adoption.

This is a brutal strategy aimed at erasing Ukrainian identity and turning these children into Russian soldiers or loyal citizens. Reports confirm that many of these children have been subjected to abuse and psychological terror.

Two Autocrats Negotiate Over Ukraine.

A Yale University program, which documented these crimes using satellite imagery, biometric data, and witness testimonies, was one of the few ways to uncover the scale of these atrocities.

This is the very program Trump has now shut down – destroying evidence that could have been used to indict Vladimir Putin at the International Criminal Court.

Why is Trump Siding with Putin?
The question now is:
Why is Trump protecting Putin and his accomplices?
Why is he ending a program that helps rescue abducted children?

Critics suspect a sinister strategy:
Trump wants Putin’s support – and is willing to sacrifice international justice for it.
His admiration for the Kremlin leader has been well-known for years.
As far back as 2007, he wrote to Putin:
“As you probably heard, I am a big fan of yours.”

Even after his presidency, Trump maintained contact with Putin and secretly sent him COVID-19 tests during the pandemic.

Now, as he fights for power again, Trump seems to be counting on Putin’s goodwill – at the cost of thousands of abducted children.

The decision to halt the Yale program is not only a political monstrosity but also a betrayal of the innocent victims of this war.

Will the world stand by and watch as Trump destroys evidence of Putin’s war crimes?
